The Cannabis Plant: More Than Just THC
Most customers walk in asking "what's the strongest?" β but as a budtender, your job is to guide them to the right product, not just the most potent one.
Understanding this is what separates a great budtender from someone just reading labels.
The Big 6 Terpenes Every Budtender Must Know
Terpenes are aromatic compounds that shape the effect, smell, and taste of cannabis. Here are the six you'll encounter daily:
Citrus scent Β· Uplifting, mood-elevating Β· Good for daytime
Earthy, musky Β· Relaxing, sedating Β· Most common terpene
Pine scent Β· Alert, focused Β· May counter short-term memory effects
Floral, lavender Β· Calming, anti-anxiety Β· Great for sleep
Spicy, pepper Β· Anti-inflammatory Β· Binds CB2 receptors
Floral, herbal Β· Energizing Β· Common in sativa-leaning strains

Edibles: The Most Misunderstood Category
Edibles are the #1 source of overconsumption incidents β not because they're dangerous, but because customers don't understand the delay. Your job as a budtender is to set expectations before every edibles sale.
"Start Low, Go Slow" β always say this. Always.
Why Edibles Hit Differently
When cannabis is eaten, it passes through the digestive system. THC is converted to 11-hydroxy-THC by the liver β a metabolite that's more potent and longer-lasting than inhaled THC.
- Onset: 30 min β 2 hours (sometimes up to 4 hours on full stomach)
- Peak: 2 β 4 hours after onset
- Duration: 4 β 8 hours total (sometimes 12 hours for high doses)
- Inhaled comparison: Effects in 5β10 min, last 2β3 hours
NY State Edibles Limits
In New York, edibles are capped at 100mg THC per package for recreational sales, with serving sizes labeled at 5mg per piece. Medical patients may access higher concentrations. Always verify current OCM guidelines.
Edibles Dosing: The Practical Guide
Use this as your quick-reference cheat sheet. Know it cold β customers will trust you instantly when you can quote these numbers from memory.
| Dose | Who It's For | Expected Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1β2.5mg | First-timers, microdosers | Mild relief, focus, no impairment |
| 5mg | Casual recreational users | Standard "one serving" β light euphoria |
| 10mg | Regular users | Strong euphoria, couch lock possible |
| 20β50mg | High tolerance / medical | Intense, medicinal, sleep-inducing |
| 50mg+ | Very high tolerance only | Overwhelming for most β never recommend |
The Script for New Edibles Customers
"Take one 5mg piece, wait a full 2 hours before considering more. Don't take it on an empty stomach. Don't mix with alcohol. And don't drive β ever."
Concentrates: The Full Breakdown
Concentrates are cannabis products with THC levels ranging from 50% to 99%+. They're made by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant using heat, pressure, or solvents. Here's what's on most NY shelves:
Compressed trichomes (kief). Made by hand-rubbing or sifting. Ranges from soft/pliable to hard brick. THC: 20β60%. Classic smoke or crumble into joints. Bubble hash = ice-water extracted, solventless.
BHO (butane hash oil) that's been agitated or whipped. Soft, opaque, waxy consistency. Easy to handle with a dab tool. THC: 60β90%. Good entry concentrate β forgiving texture.
BHO that was purged without agitation β creates a glass-like, brittle amber sheet. High clarity. THC: 70β90%. Breaks (shatters) easily. Harder to handle cold but very potent and pure.
Made from fresh-frozen plant (not dried/cured). Preserves the full terpene profile β most flavorful concentrate. THC: 65β95%. Premium product. Sauce, sugar, or badder consistency. Most authentic strain experience.
Made with just heat + pressure β zero chemicals. Clean, pure, full-spectrum. THC: 60β80%. Premium price point. Live rosin = from fresh-frozen material, absolute top tier. Great for health-conscious customers.
Ultra-refined oil with THC stripped to near-pure levels (85β99%). No taste or smell on its own. Used in vape carts, edibles, tinctures. Terpenes added back in post-process. Most versatile form β base for many products.
THCA in crystalline form β up to 99.9% pure. Often served in "sauce" (terpene-rich liquid). When heated, THCA converts to THC. Absolute highest potency available. For experienced consumers only β communicate this clearly.
